General Motors Co. Reinvests in Missouri Plants

For the auto industry in the last couple of months, the good news just seems to keep coming. It's been a long wait though, for people in towns like Wentzville, MO, who in the last couple years, have seen thousands of autoworkers and part suppliers lose their jobs in the face of a downturned economy. But the end of 2011, it seems, is ushering in thousands of new jobs for autoworkers. General Motors Co., along with a couple other major American automakers, recently announced a reinvestment in plants that took deep cuts in recent years.

The $380-million investment from GMC will add a new pickup truck to the production line, over 1,200 new jobs, and 500,000 square feet to the Wentzville plant. Additionally, an extra four-hundred employees will be returning to the second shift, something General Motors had to eliminate in 2009.

These evolvements serve to bring Missouri auto production back to where it was before the economy dipped - just behind Michigan.  GMC's success in Missouri will not just be isolated to Wentzville, either. It signals the American automotive industry's emergence from an undeniably a very dark time and will benefit people industry-wide. As Missouri governor Jay Nixon says, "Today, we're here to celebrate the future of the American auto industry, and my friends, the future is bright."1

So what does this all mean to you? Beside improved moral, more all-American trucks like the GMC Sierra.
